On 24 August 1894 a business that was to become the world-wide Bata Shoe Organization was started in the small town of Zlín in Czechoslovakia.
Initially, growth was steady and sustained. The company thrived on Bata's visionary approach to work and community. Led by Bata's clear and unequivocal philosophy, during a period of such social and political turbulence, the town and its people flourished. Houses in Zlín were built in a chequerboard pattern to allow a free flow of air around them, with the intention of promoting a healthier workforce. Typically, homes in wooded residential areas of Zlín were designed as modern, individual dwellings for workers and their families.
