East Tilbury

The British Bata headquarters at East Tilbury evolved from a single retail shop, in 1932, to a site of unique industrial and community development. By the 1960s, recognized as one of the most important manufacturer-distributors in the UK and beyond, the name Bata had become synonymous with the term "Shoemakers to the world". In an enterprise that lifted a sparse 670-acre Thames Estuary site into a thriving community, the Bata headquarters became the heart of a vast township - comprising factories, homes, shops, a hotel, swimming pool, tennis courts, cinema, model farm, school and sports ground.
